As part of the design brief for the
RSTM rifle mounted laser projector AOS Technology Ltd were tasked
with developing a high quality laser transmitter with exceptional
beam quality at 100m. In addition the optical power requirements
under a number of operational conditions needed to be evaluated and
a full laser safety audit conducted in accordance with both the
European Standard and the Joint Services Publication JSP390 Military
Laser Safety Document. The projector has a dual classification
depending upon its mode of operation and a number of safety circuits
to ensure that this classification is not breached.
Optical conditioning of the beam was accomplished using a specially
corrected high quality laser diode in combination with a precision
mounted and aligned diffractive optic element. All the laser diode
and lens mounts and the manufacturing jigs were designed and
manufactured in-house. Following evaluation of the beam profile by
the customer a small manufacturing run was conducted and associated
mechanical mounts designed both for the laser module inside the RSTM
projector and for the projector on a SA80 rifle. Each complete and
tested RSTM module was supplied with a test certificate detailing
the measured beam profile and the rated optical power so that the
customer could assure the MOD that module met its specification.
This research and development programme is a good example of the
versatility of the services that AOS can provide and highlights the
need in product development for a wide and diverse skill base.
